Basic Competition Information

So, you've decided to enter your first competition. First, make sure you get your coach's permission, then your parent's!  Second, you will need to have music, outfit, a routine, and a training plan.  These can be worked out between you, your parents, and your coach.  If something isn't clearly explained to you, ask! Your coach will make sure that you understand what to do, and where to go before and on the day of the competition.  Your coach will make sure that you have been tested ISI and the results submitted at least 30 days prior to the competition (for ISI comps) and likewise for the appropriate USFS tests.

Be sure you've rested the night before. Pack your skate bag. Here is a basic list of items you will need:

  • Your skates (BOTH of them!)
  • Your dress / tights (or pants and shirt if male)
  • A spare set of tights
  • Extra scrunchies, bobbie pins, etc
  • Any makeup you will require
  • Comb, brush, hairspray
  • Sweater or warm-up jacket
  • Your tape (labeled, rewound, and tested) and a backup tape (labeled, rewound, and tested) or 2 CD's (labeled) (note: most rinks use CD-R's only)
  • Guards and soakers
  • Your "emergency bag" (this should contain spare screws for your blades, a screwdriver, spare laces, band-aids, aspirin, etc)
  • Inhaler (if needed) and any other medications needed
  • Your USFSA number or ISI number
  • Know your event number and time and pay attention to the events prior to yours!
  • Directions to the rink
  • Money to pay for taping (if desired) and for food/drink
  • Your coach's cell phone number!

  • Eat lightly the day of your event. Don't eat junk/candy. Drink or sip water. Be sure to use the bathroom well before your event.  About an hour before your event, be ready and in your dress/skates and checked in with your coach.  Check in with the ice monitor to see if they are running on time or ahead/behind of schedule. Don't wander off!

Your coach will fill you in with what to do just before your warm-up. Listen to him/her.

    Most importantly-HAVE FUN!
